Saint Nerses Thronhali

Saint Nerses Thronhali (Nerses D Klaietsi, Nerses the Singer, June 4, 1102, Armenian Mesopotamia — August 13, 1173, Romkla, Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia), Armenian church figure, theologian, poet, musicologist, songwriter, historian, since 1166 All Armenians Catholicos. For his multi-talented contemporaries, he was called Shnorali.

Biography:
He was born in the Tsovk castle of the Tluk province of Armenian Mesopotamia, in the noble family of his father, Prince Apirat Pahlavun. Nerses Shnorhali is the great-grandson of Grigor Magistros Pahlavou and the younger brother of Grigor G (Pokr Vkayaser) Pahlavou. He was one of the most educated people of his time. He received a solid education at the Red Monastery School under Bishop Stepanos Manuk.

Catholicos of All Armenians since 1166. Died on August 13, 1173, in Romkla. He was buried in Romkla Castle. The Armenian Church ranked him among the saints and his memory is celebrated every year on the Translator’s Day.
